No eran lugares para el culto público o ceremonias como los templos egipcios, sino que se consideraban la morada de la deidad patrona de la ciudad. Se construían con ladrillos de adobe secados al sol en su núcleo, y a menudo se revestían con ladrillos cocidos más resistentes a la intemperie, a veces vitrificados en diferentes colores, lo que les daba un aspecto impresionante. La forma escalonada, con varias terrazas que disminuían de tamaño hacia la cima, es su característica más distintiva.

Ziggurats were massive stepped structures built in ancient Mesopotamia (in the regions of Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria—what is now roughly Iraq and parts of Syria and Iran). Unlike Egyptian temples, they were not places for public worship or ceremonies, but were considered the dwelling places of the city's patron deity. At the top, there was usually a shrine or temple accessible only to high-ranking priests.

These structures were constructed with sun-dried mud bricks at their core, often covered with kiln-fired bricks that were more resistant to weather. Sometimes these outer bricks were glazed in different colors, giving the ziggurat an impressive appearance. Their most distinctive feature is the stepped shape, with several terraces that decreased in size as they rose.

One of the most famous ziggurats is the Great Ziggurat of Ur, dedicated to the moon god Nanna, which has been partially reconstructed and gives a fantastic idea of its scale. Another well-known example, although only its foundations remain today, is Etemenanki in Babylon, dedicated to the god Marduk—believed by many scholars to be one of the inspirations for the biblical story of the Tower of Babel.
